You can withdraw your EPF balance in full on retirement (after age 55) or after leaving employment and staying unemployed for the waiting period EPFO specifies, and you can take partial withdrawals for specific needs such as housing, illness, education or marriage. A full withdrawal is tax-free if you have 5 years of continuous service, counting previous employers whose PF was transferred. Withdraw earlier and part of the amount becomes taxable, with TDS of 10% if the payout is ₹50,000 or more and you have provided your PAN.

The guide at a glance

  • An EPF withdrawal is tax-free after 5 years of continuous service, including earlier employers' service if the PF was transferred.
  • Before 5 years, TDS of 10% applies on payouts of ₹50,000 or more with PAN, and 20% without PAN.
  • Partial withdrawals for permitted purposes such as housing, illness, education or marriage are allowed without closing the account.
  • When changing jobs, transferring PF keeps service continuous and the balance growing; withdrawing breaks both.

Full withdrawal (final settlement)

A final settlement closes the PF account and pays out the employee and employer shares with interest. It is allowed:

  • On retirement after age 55.
  • After leaving a job and remaining unemployed for the prescribed period. EPFO's FAQ has long stated a two-month wait after resignation. EPFO's Central Board approved changes to withdrawal rules in October 2025, including a longer waiting period for premature final settlement, so check the rule in force on the EPFO member portal before you apply.

If you are simply changing jobs, transfer the PF to the new employer's account instead. Transferring keeps your service continuous for the 5-year tax rule and keeps the money compounding for retirement. Withdrawing at every job change is one of the most common reasons people reach 60 with a small corpus — project the difference with the EPF calculator.

Partial withdrawals (advances)

You can withdraw part of your balance without closing the account for permitted purposes, each historically with its own minimum service and maximum amount:

  • Buying or building a house, or repaying a home loan
  • Medical treatment for yourself or family members
  • Higher education or marriage of self, children or siblings
  • Specific situations such as lockout or natural calamity

The October 2025 board decision approved merging these purposes into a few broad categories, a common minimum service of 12 months, and a minimum balance (25% of contributions) that must stay in the account. Confirm the current limits on the member portal before applying. Partial withdrawals for permitted purposes are generally not taxed.

When is EPF withdrawal taxable?

If you have 5 or more years of continuous service, the full withdrawal is tax-free. Service with previous employers counts only if the PF was transferred into the current account. It is also tax-free if service ended early because of ill health, closure of the employer's business or other reasons beyond your control.

If you withdraw before 5 years, the payout is taxed as though the benefit never existed:

  • Employer's contribution and interest on it — taxable as salary for the years concerned.
  • Your own contribution — taxable only to the extent you claimed 80C on it in the old regime.
  • Interest on your own contribution — taxable as income from other sources.

Separately, interest on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh where there is no employer contribution) is taxable every year, even if you do not withdraw. A note on law: the Income-tax Act, 2025 renumbers the relevant provisions from 1 April 2026; familiar references such as Section 192A for TDS describe the same rules.

TDS on EPF withdrawal

  • No TDS if service is 5 years or more, or the payout is below ₹50,000.
  • 10% TDS if service is under 5 years, the payout is ₹50,000 or more and PAN is linked.
  • 20% TDS if PAN is not provided.
  • If your total income is below the taxable limit, you can submit Form 15G (or 15H if 60 or older) to avoid TDS.

TDS is not the final tax. It is credited against your liability when you file your return, and you may owe more or get a refund.

Worked example: leaving after 3 years

Suppose you leave a job after 3 years, are not taking up new covered employment, and the final settlement is ₹4 lakh. Because service is under 5 years and the amount is above ₹50,000, the EPFO deducts 10% — ₹40,000 — if PAN is linked, and ₹80,000 if it is not. In your return, the employer share and interest are added to salary income, the interest on your share goes under other sources, and your own contributions are taxed only if you claimed 80C on them. Had you transferred the account and kept working, the same money would have stayed invested and become tax-free after 5 years of total service.

Before you withdraw

  • Check that your UAN is activated, KYC (Aadhaar, PAN, bank) is seeded and your exit date is updated.
  • The pension (EPS) portion follows separate rules; with under 10 years of service you may get a withdrawal benefit instead of a pension.
  • For short-term needs, compare a partial withdrawal with other options — the long-term cost of breaking retirement savings is high.
  • See how PF affects your pay in CTC vs in-hand salary and the CTC to In-Hand calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is PF withdrawal taxable?

Not if you have 5 or more years of continuous service, counting previous employers whose PF was transferred, or if service ended for reasons beyond your control. Before 5 years, the employer share and its interest are taxed as salary, interest on your share as other income, and your own contributions only if you claimed 80C on them.

How much TDS is deducted on PF withdrawal?

If service is under 5 years and the payout is ₹50,000 or more, EPFO deducts 10% TDS when PAN is linked, and 20% without PAN. There is no TDS after 5 years of service or on smaller payouts. If your total income is below the taxable limit, Form 15G or 15H can prevent the deduction.

Can I withdraw my full PF after leaving a job?

Yes, after remaining unemployed for the waiting period EPFO prescribes. Its FAQ has long stated two months after resignation, but EPFO's board approved changes to withdrawal rules in October 2025, so check the current rule on the member portal. If you are joining a new employer, transferring the PF is usually the better choice.
